Chapter 7: Working and Learning From Home

T he 2020 pandemic dramatically altered life around the globe, and one of its most prominent effects was forcing many people to take their work or studies from office buildings to living rooms.

Though the pandemic brought us many difficulties, it has also created some positive outcomes. Businesses have been pushed to embrace technology in new ways, and universities now offer online courses as a regular part of their curricula. This evolution promises exciting changes in how we work, study, and go about our day-to-day lives.

In many sectors, the worlds of work and learning are embracing a hybrid model based on remote and face-to-face activities. However, this new hybrid model also brings challenges for those like us who have ADHD, and for this reason, I decided to add a dedicated chapter.

This chapter may not apply to many professions, but it could shed new light on how to improve productivity for those that can be pursued from the comfort of home.

Speaking with my clients, I realized that the number of people who work or study from home at least a couple of days a week is on the rise. So, I hope this chapter will be helpful for a good chunk of readers.

Working or studying from home can provide tremendous opportunities for women with ADHD, allowing them to work in an environment that is better tailored to their needs. In addition, the flexible schedule and reduced distractions may enable these individuals to reach their maximum productivity potential.

The problem is that we are not in an ideal world where our ADHD brain behaves as we would like. Being able to build our schedule in some cases means that we would keep getting distracted all day long and not make any progress on our tasks. Also, a few distractions are good if you focus on the right thing. One day I spent four hours playing chess online just because I went into hyperfocus mode; I didn’t do anything else. It wasn’t my finest day.

Personally, I love working from home, but it is not so simple. For example, in the office and schools, there is an “infrastructure” that we don’t see; these environments are set up to support productivity. Performing the same tasks at home might become challenging without this invisible infrastructure.

Luckily, the time of being forced to stay home is gone, and now, in most cases, it is up to the individual to decide whether to work or study from home. So, unlike in pandemic times, we don’t have to adapt, and we can make our own choices.

Depending on your perspective, working and studying from home can be a blessing or a curse. In this chapter, we'll explore the upsides and downsides of remote work and some helpful tips I've picked up over the years.

Structure

Everyone has their morning rituals. If we have to go to school or work, we have the alarm clock set at a specific time. We know when to shower, have breakfast, get dressed, and leave the house.
